Coat dress in heavy Italian cotton bull drill, printed and hand-embroidered with Robyn Mayo's artwork 'Gardenia with Aboriginal Basket'.
In this piece, Mayo’s artwork is intricately mirrored to an almost psychedelic effect, perfectly positioned around the wearer’s body through custom placement print. Roots and blossoms tangle and grow as the basket itself gains central focus: aptly placed on the pockets, it gains tridimensional depth through a cacophony of hand-embroidery in dissonant techniques, ranging from fine metallic thread to thick cotton knots. Dense macrame tassels cascade down the hem, giving the garment movement and heft.
A classic 1950s silhouette is revisited: ample bell sleeves and a sharply tailored bodice contrast with a full skirt with exaggerated hem circumference, finishing in a leaf-entwined heart shape positioned neatly on the back.
Passages from Mayo's book 'Vast', in which Mayo chronicles her experiences and learnings while travelling through the Australian outback complete the piece, paying homage to Australia's cultural history, flora, fauna and people. The final detail to be discovered, custom-designed horn buttons ripe with thread decorations are hidden beneath the extended lapel, a considered touch for the wearer to discover.
